Putin pledges unity while police round up protesters

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Vladimir Putin took the oath as Russia's president on Monday with a ringing appeal for unity at the start of a six-year term in which he faces growing dissent, economic problems and bitter political rivalries.

Parliament is expected to approve to his ally Dmitry Medvedev, 46, as prime minister on Tuesday, completing a job swap that has left many Russians feeling disenfranchised two decades after the Soviet Union collapsed.

Outside the Kremlin's high red walls, riot police prevented protests by rounding up about 300 people, including men and women in cafes who were wearing the white ribbons symbolizing opposition to Putin, a day after detaining more than 400 during clashes.

But in the Kremlin, 2,000 dignitaries applauded Putin's every step down the red carpet into a vast hall with gilded columns, the throne room of tsars, where he was sworn in with his right hand resting on the red-bound Russian constitution.

"We will achieve our goals if we are a single, united people, if we hold our fatherland dear, strengthen Russian democracy, constitutional rights and freedoms," Putin said in a five-minute speech after taking the oath for the third time.

"I will do all I can to justify the faith of millions of our citizens. I consider it to be the meaning of my whole life and my obligation to serve my fatherland and our people."

The Kremlin's bells pealed, and the national anthem blared at the end of a ceremony which was followed by the head of the Russian Orthodox Church blessing Putin and the president taking charge of the nuclear suitcase.

Although he has remained Russia's dominant leader for the past four years as prime minister, Putin, 59, has now taken back the formal reins of power he ceded to Medvedev in 2008 after eight years as president.

AUTHORITY WEAKENED

Putin is returning with his authority weakened by months of protests that have polarized Russia and left the former KGB spy facing a battle to reassert himself or risk being sidelined by the business and political elites whose backing is vital.

"We want to, and we will, live in a democratic country," Putin declared, evoking patriotic images of Russia as a great nation and urging people to show a sense of responsibility and national pride to make the country stronger.

Putin made no mention of the protest movement in his speech and no promises of political reform in a series of decrees he signed after the ceremony, most of them focused on economic goals and efforts to improve living standards.

Despite his pledge, riot police, nervous after battling protesters at an anti-Putin rally on Sunday, cracked down on the slightest sign of dissent on the streets of central Moscow, many of which were almost empty.

At least 22 protesters were led away when a crowd of more than 100 started shouting "Russia without Putin" near two luxury hotels 500 m (yards) from the Kremlin.

"This shows that Putin is scared of dissatisfied citizens. Although there are not so many of us, there are not so few either," said 18-year-old student Pavel Kopilkov.

Dozens of others were detained by police on a boulevard near the route of Putin's motorcade to the ceremony, including some who had been sitting outside a French bistro wearing the white ribbon of protest on their jackets and coats.

A Reuters correspondent saw tables and chairs being overturned as the people were hauled away.

"This is shameful. This is not how you celebrate a holiday - this is how you celebrate seizing power," liberal opposition leader Boris Nemtsov said shortly before he was detained.

Police moved in quickly several times through the day as activists sought to gather in various locations for protests, pressing against crowds and detaining people.

Moscow police said 300 had been detained, but that the number included some people who were released and then detained when attempting to protest again.

In Putin's hometown of St Petersburg, police detained a few protesters in a crowd of dozens on the central Palace Square.

PUTIN UNDER PRESSURE

Although the protests, sparked by allegations of electoral fraud, had lost momentum before Sunday's rally, they have given birth to a civil society that will press on with attempts to undermine Putin's authority by contesting local elections.

Many of the protesters are angry that Putin is extending his 12-year domination of Russia and fear he will stifle political and economic reform in his third term as president.

He is under pressure to show he can adapt to the new political landscape. Few think he has changed much, if at all.

He has eased up on the choreographed macho antics that long burnished his image in Russia, such as riding horseback barechested and shooting a tiger with a tranquilizer gun.

Harder to shake off will be his habit of seeking total control, as political rivals begin to gain status and a rising middle class demands more political freedom.

He has to quell rivalries between liberals and conservatives battling for positions in the new cabinet under Medvedev, who is swapping jobs with Putin. The outcome of the struggle could help determine how far reforms go to improve the investment climate.

The $1.9 trillion economy is in better shape than that of most European countries, but is vulnerable to any drop in the price of oil, the main export commodity. The budget is under pressure from Putin's lavish pre-election spending promises.

Putin has said he wants to attract more foreign investment by improving the business climate, reduce corruption and red tape, and end Russia's heavy dependence on energy exports.

He called for the creation of a "new economy" in the speech and reiterated those goals in economic decrees signed on Monday, but critics say he has had plenty of time to tackle the persistent problems in his years in power.

He set out aims on a range of issues in other decrees, from higher wages for teachers and other state workers to better weapons for the military and a decrease in Russia's death rate.

As in the past, he is likely to use tough anti-Western rhetoric on foreign policy to drum up support if times get tough in Russia. But he never yielded his strong influence over foreign policy as premier, so a major policy shift is unlikely.

Putin struck familiar chords in a decree on foreign policy, emphasizing opposition to interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states and saying Moscow wants "strategic" ties with the United States but will not tolerate meddling.

Dry rivers, vibrant with culture and life

Monday, May 7, 2012

'When the River Runs Dry' is a familiar song in Australia. Some rivers in the arid center of the continent flow only after a stiff monsoon season, and smaller tributaries all over the country commonly shrink to puddled potholes and dry river beds during the dry season. But rivers also run dry in more temperate climes. Much of the upper reaches and feeder streams of the great rivers of North America, and even the mighty Amazon, dry out seasonally.

Dry rivers are more than mere desiccated shells of their robustly flowing incarnations, says Australian ecologist Alisha Steward and colleagues. In the May issue of ESA's journal Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, they contend that dry river ecology is under-researched and under-appreciated.

"I was drawn to dry stream ecology from working on river health monitoring and assessment programs," said Steward, a PhD student at Griffith University in Brisbane, Queensland. "Many potential river monitoring sites turned out to be dry and couldn't be sampled. It was very annoying! It started to get me thinking that 'dry' wasn't necessarily bad or unnatural - some rivers were naturally dry at particular times of the year."

Dry river beds have qualities and inhabitants distinct from their adjacent riversides, as well as from their wet-phase communities, says Steward. They are places of isolation and re-connection: when rivers flow, aquatic animals, plants and microorganisms, organic material, and nutrients flow as well.

Temporary rivers are conduits for biota even when dry, sometimes guiding animals through human-dominated landscapes that lack other continuous habitat. They demand great resilience of their permanent inhabitants, which must be able to survive the swings from immersion to dry land to wet again. Plants, algae, insects, fungi, and even fish have adapted to ride out the dry spells, sometimes seeming to resurrect themselves miraculously from the dust. In the more ephemeral rivers of arid regions, the demands are extreme, the flows erratic, and often separated by years.

But in arid country, dry river beds are oases for animals and people alike. They are sources of water and greenery. Worldwide, human societies use the rich and episodically dry land for vegetable patches, orchards, and pastureland, walking and vehicle paths, hunting and hiking, and herding animals to market. We mine the beds for sand and gravel to build homes and businesses. We park our cars in the beds, and hold races and festivals on the flat river bottoms.

Land use changes, climate changes, and diversions to water projects are transforming historically perennial rivers into capricious or seasonal flows. Impoundment behind weirs and dams can completely dry a river course, or, conversely, turn an erratic flow continuous or cyclical through controlled releases. Steward thinks these are good reasons to learn more about the ecology of intermittent river systems.

"Aquatic scientists seem to ignore dry river beds because they don't contain water, and terrestrial scientists seem to ignore them because they are considered to be part of a river!" said Steward. But they are not typically recognized as "rivers" by government programs, she said, complicating monitoring programs.

'Avengers' smashes record: $200.3 million debut

(AP) ? Hulk, smash.

That's what Captain America tells the Incredible Hulk to do in "The Avengers," and that's what the Marvel Comics superhero mash-up did at the box office, smashing the domestic revenue record with a $200.3 million debut.

It's by far the biggest opening ever, shooting past the previous record of $169.2 million for the debut of last year's "Harry Potter" finale.

"The Avengers" added $151.5 million overseas over the weekend to bring its total to $441.5 million since it began opening internationally a week earlier.

That raised the film's worldwide haul to $641.8 million in barely a week and a half, more than its Marvel superhero forerunners "Iron Man," ''Iron Man 2," ''Thor" and "Captain America" took in during their entire runs.

If distributor Disney's domestic estimate Sunday holds when the final weekend count is released Monday, "The Avengers" would be the first movie ever to haul in $200 million in a single weekend.

A $200 million total for every movie in release is considered a great weekend for the business as a whole, so "The Avengers" redefines the standards for a blockbuster debut.

"If 'The Avengers' is any indication, we're going to see a leap rather than a gentle little nudge into new territory, and the lineup is there to justify it going forward," said Greg Foster, chairman and president of the huge-screen IMAX cinema chain.

Crowds were so anxious to see the film on IMAX's giant screens that Foster said the company had only one problem: it ran out of seats to sell.

Hollywood launched a potentially record-shattering summer with a vengeance, "The Avengers" landing as just the first of three huge superhero tales that highlight a lineup filled with other blockbusters in the making.

"The Amazing Spider-Man" follows on July 3 and "The Dark Knight Rises" wraps up the current Batman series on July 20.

Until the "Harry Potter" finale, 2008's "The Dark Knight" had held the revenue record with a $158.4 million debut. Before that, the record-holder was 2007's "Spider-Man 3" with $151.1 million.

So anticipation for those two films could rival that of "The Avengers."

Along with the superhero films, Hollywood's summer lineup includes the action tales "Men in Black 3," ''G.I. Joe: Retaliation," ''Battleship," ''Total Recall" and "Prometheus," director Ridley Scott's return to the sci-fi territory of his horror hit "Alien."

Big family fare includes the animated adventures "Brave," from "Toy Story" creator Pixar Animation, and the sequels "Ice Age: Continental Drift" and "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted."

The comedy lineup features Adam Sandler's "That's My Boy," Will Ferrell's "The Campaign" and Sacha Baron Cohen's "The Dictator."

PFT: Seau's family now unsure about donating brain

roger-goodell-sized-getty-02Getty Images

As the legal battle between the NFL and the NFLPA launches, with the players initially trying to steer the appeals of the suspensions of Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma, Saints defensive end Will Smith, Browns linebacker Scott Fujita, and Packers defensive end Anthony Hargrove away from Commissioner Roger Goodell, nagging questions remain regarding the quality of the league?s evidence that players funded a pool that was intended to pay other players who inflicted injury on opponents ? and that players actually received money for inflicting injury on opponents.? Specific proof in this regard has yet to be made available to the media and the public, or more importantly to the NFLPA.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the union has had limited access to information establishing player guilt.? Specifically, the NFLPA has received the March 2 ?confidential? report of NFL Security (which promptly was leaked to the media by one or more teams), the March 21 announcement of discipline upon the Saints, coach Sean Payton, G.M. Mickey Loomis, assistant head coach/linebackers coach Joe Vitt, and former Saints (now Rams) defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, and roughly 20 Power Point slides that were shown, but not given, to union representatives at a meeting to discuss the situation.? (The media, and in turn the public, has had access to everything but the Power Point slides.)

At some point, the NFL must disclose all information to the NFLPA, including the precise basis for the factual conclusions the league has reached.? It?s not enough to provide summaries of evidence; the league must identify for the NFLPA how it knows what it knows, and that evidence must be subject to scrutiny, via cross-examination or otherwise.

Earlier this week, NFL ?independent? counsel Mary Jo White carefully sidestepped questions regarding whether witnesses who supplied information to the league will testify at the coming appeal hearings, and whether the NFL will even disclose their identities to the NFLPA.? Again, there?s a fundamental difference between protecting a whistleblower and affording due process to persons accused of wrongdoing.? While it?s important to encourage persons with knowledge to come forward by protecting them from retaliation, it?s equally important to ensure that the information provided by such persons can be tested.? Eventually, a whistleblower must become a witness, or true justice cannot be done.

That?s not to say the players are entitled to the full range of Constitutional rights, including the right to confront accusers.? After all, this is a private, quasi-judicial process involvement employment rights.? Whether Commissioner Roger Goodell or someone else resolves the appeals, the players aren?t ?on trial? in the classic sense.

Still, they have a fundamental right:? (1) to know the specific factual basis for the conclusions that have been made; and (2) to scrutinize and challenge those facts.? By providing all witnesses with the kind of protection that, ironically, the league failed to give Jeremy Shockey, the NFL necessarily fails to provide the players with a fair opportunity to defend their reputations and their incomes.

For now, there are only conclusions offered unilaterally by the league.? Those conclusions can?t be tested unless the NFL discloses the facts on which those conclusions were based to the NFLPA.? Whether or not those facts exist (and the NFL surely believes they do), it?s wrong to conceal them from the NFLPA.

'Avengers' Fans Rave About 'Unbelievable' Film At Midnight Screening

'My mind was just blown,' one moviegoer tells MTV News in Times Square.
By Fallon Prinzivalli

The long-awaited "Avengers" finally assembled Thursday night at theaters throughout North America with one of the biggest midnight openings since "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2." We were on the scene in New York's Times Square, where fans dressed as Loki and the Hulk donned their RealD "Avengers" collector glasses and couldn't stop raving about Earth's mightiest heroes.

"I was really worried that it was gonna be just subpar, if not even at all good. But then I saw it. I just had to sit there for a minute and just take it in. It was amazing!" said Akil Vichus Davis, who was skeptical that director Joss Whedon could take on such a hefty project. But he was pleasantly surprised and said he's very happy with the outcome. "It was solid. It was good. The stories were good. They had great moments. The cinematography, the directing, it was off the chain. It was good."

Marvel fan Justin Silver agreed, saying, "My mind was just blown. I was just like, 'Oh my God!' It was crazy. It was unbelievable!"

The ensemble cast includes Marvel newcomer Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk and many actors reprising their roles, including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Evans, who plays Captain America. Anand Kodamanchili was thrilled with how much the legendary First Avenger was featured in the film. "I'm a huge fan of Captain America, and just watching him kick some serious ass again, again and again was pretty awesome," he gushed.

With its earlier overseas release, "The Avengers" has raked in more than $300 million internationally so far, according to Deadline Hollywood. When box-office expert Jeff Bock said, "This isn't just a movie, it's an event," he wasn't kidding. AMC Theaters held the daylong "Ultimate Marvel Marathon," screening "Iron Man," "The Incredible Hulk," "Iron Man 2," "Thor" and "Captain America" back-to-back leading up to the "Avengers" midnight release. The screenings sold out in numerous major theaters in North America more than a month ago.

Deadline also reports that the film grossed a total of $281.1 million through its first eight days overseas and is slated to hit over $160 million in the U.S. through Sunday. With a rise in ticket prices, especially 3-D and IMAX, there's a strong chance it could top the current record, held by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2," of $169.2 million. If you include the opening weekend in Russia and China, the film could potentially make close to $585 million worldwide through Sunday. A studio mogul told Deadline, "It's tracking off the charts. Biggest in every category and with everyone — men, women, young, old. Any way you slice and dice it. It's just a mega-movie."

So what's the secret? We certainly noticed a mix of men and women at the premiere release last night. Moviegoer Kelly Burbrink enjoyed the comedic parts of the film. "[I] absolutely loved the one-liners of the humor," she said. "They were fantastic and I'm sure we missed a bunch because everyone was just dying laughing after them that you couldn't hear what came right after. They were just hysterical."

There's something in it for everyone. Action, comedy, an insanely attractive cast — and when you mix that with the directing talents of Joss Whedon, it's no wonder fan Nicole DeBonis screams, "Oh my gosh! No words can describe it."

Daniel Vives agrees and highly recommends the film for all audiences, saying, "Joss Whedon did an excellent job with directing and writing the movie. Everyone needs to go see this movie."

"The Avengers" is currently in theaters nationwide.

Tenzin Dorjee: Remembering Adam Yauch

I met Adam Yauch only once. It was during a bathroom break, which came at the end of a heated session in a Tibet-China conference at Harvard in 2002. I rushed to the bathroom and found myself standing next to Adam Yauch, who was using the urinal to my right.

We greeted each other in Tibetan. I was an international relations student at Brown University at the time.

"Isn't it appalling, what they were saying?" I said, referring to a couple of Chinese academics who had been arguing that the Chinese Communists truly wanted to liberate the Tibetans, almost "out of kindness."

They were describing Tibet in a language that betrayed their Han chauvinism, and every Tibetan in the room was visibly distraught. But most of us were tongue-tied, understandably intimidated by the heavy use of political terminology by professors and researchers who hid the ultimate weakness of their arguments behind the cloak of academic jargon.

One of the Chinese academics had a deep, commanding voice that made up for his thick accent. He seemed to be aware of the impact his voice was having on his audience, as he continued to lecture the Tibetans about how much Chinese leaders truly respected the wishes of the Tibetan people.

At that point, Adam stood up and said, in a soft but firm voice, "If the Chinese authorities respected the Tibetan people's wishes so much, then why wouldn't they just pack up and leave Tibet? Because that's clearly what the Tibetans want."

Silence fell upon all. The academic had no answer, because the question was direct, simple and honest. It pierced right through all the pretension, and illuminated everything in an instant.

This, in essence, represents the monumental impact Adam had on the Tibetan freedom struggle. His compassion, action and creativity illuminated to the whole world the truth of China's oppression of Tibetans.

After backpacking in Nepal, where he met Tibetan refugees for the first time, Adam came home and founded the Milarepa Fund, a nonprofit advocacy organization named after Tibet's most famous and beloved saint. Milarepa was an eleventh century Tibetan saint whose life and words have provided inspiration to countless Tibetans searching for spiritual liberation, and his story of tragedy and triumphs have served as milestones and benchmarks in seekers' journey toward enlightenment. His verses, simple and melodious, are sung to this day in the form of songs and opera.

It is not hard to understand why Adam found inspiration in Milarepa. Himself a spiritual seeker, Adam turned his musical genius into a force for social and political justice. Taking on the biggest colonial empire on the planet, he became a fierce advocate of Tibetan freedom.

Acting upon his belief that change in Tibet can only come through public awareness and grassroots pressure, he reached out to the greatest musicians of the era. He then set about organizing a series of mega concerts in North America, Europe and Asia that came to be known as the Tibetan Freedom Concerts. It was these concerts from 1996 to 2001, attended by hundreds of thousands, and the grassroots awareness they created, that eventually transformed the Tibetan cause from an obscure, fringe issue into a defining political movement of our time.

Adam supported numerous Tibetan projects, most visibly Students for a Free Tibet (SFT). The Milarepa Fund, founded by Adam, was one of the three organizations that helped birth SFT in 1994, as an answer to the rapidly growing youth interest in Tibet. Today SFT is one of the leading organizations in the movement.

To the end of his tragically short life, he remained a fierce warrior and humble supporter of the Tibetan freedom movement.

Ever since we shared that short conversation at the urinals at Harvard, I have always pictured him as a simple, unassuming human being with a heart the size of a universe. Adam was a true American saint.

Natgas trading legend Arnold retires, ending era

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Legendary natural gas trader John Arnold is closing down his flagship Centaurus fund, sources said on Wednesday, ending an era in which the former Enron wunderkind defined the high-risk, big-reward energy speculator.

After two years of struggling to maintain outsized returns as gas prices sank to 10-year lows and trading regulations grew tighter, Arnold told investors he would return their funds and pursue "other interests", according to an investor in the fund who had received the letter.

Natural gas prices tumbled after news of the fund's closure, ending the day down nearly 5 percent.

Centaurus, famed for gaining more than 300 percent in 2006 by taking bets opposite to those held by failed rival Amaranth Advisors, was the most successful energy hedge fund ever, boasting a compound annual return of about 130 percent.

Formed in 2002 when Arnold was a 20-something whiz kid from Enron, Centaurus grew to as much as $5 billion at its peak, earning him a personal fortune estimated at $3 billion.

In recent years, Arnold's pledge to give away three-quarters of his fortune drew more attention than his trading prowess.

At the fund's offices in Houston, a 65-story blue glass skyscraper that is a landmark in the posh Galleria area, several casually dressed employees entering the Centaurus suite declined comment, saying only: "He's retiring." A person who answered the phone there said no one was available to comment.

Arnold and his fund drew measured praise from some peers and rivals who have watched his career -- often with awe -- over 17 years. But there was little surprise at his move.

Arnold had thrived on the extreme volatility of the natural gas market, once the Wild West of commodities. But booming output of shale gas in recent years has produced a glut of natural gas in the United States, taming prices which have plumbed their lowest levels in a decade.

"I think his style, and how the market was during his time of trading, was really legendary. He just kept making returns with that kind of volatility," said former Sempra star gas trader Todd Esse, who now manages about $500 million at hedge fund Sasco Energy Partners in Westport, Connecticut.

"Success never went to his head, that's for sure."

The Centaurus Energy Master Fund is the biggest one that is open to outside investors, the source said. Arnold had a total of about $4 billion assets under management last year, although the source estimated that the Master Fund held around $2 billion.

The fund suffered its first-ever annual loss in 2010, and Arnold, who turned 37 last year, reduced its size because of diminishing market volatility and tough new limits on commodity speculators. He returned $1 billion of capital to investors last summer. The fund gained less than 10 percent in 2011.

Natural gas futures extended earlier losses by about 5 cents per million British thermal units (mmBtu) on news of the fund's closure, halting a recent rebound in prices from a 10-year low hit two weeks ago.

Some traders said Arnold may need to unwind positions to close out the fund. Other analysts said the losses were a reflection of waning faith among traders that natural gas is going to recover any time soon.

"When people see this big a speculator getting out of the game, there is a possibility that, because fundamentals are weak anyway, it does take confidence out of the market," said Phil Flynn, analyst, PFGBest Research in Chicago.

ON THE HILL

Arnold is not the only commodity fund manager to bow out after one of the most industry's difficult years. Pierre Andurand and his partners said a month ago they would shut down BlueGold Capital, an oil-oriented fund, after a 35 percent slump in 2011. Billionaire George Soros said a year ago that he would stop managing outside money, converting his fund to a family office.

Like many hedge fund managers Arnold shunned the media, but his youth and success drew widespread attention, and he was called to testify before Congress in 2008 as soaring energy prices prompted a political attack on speculators.

Traders said U.S. regulatory moves toward position limits on speculation in commodity markets may have constrained a trader like Arnold accustomed to placing big bets. Centaurus has been hit with small fines in recent years for violating position limits on NYMEX natural gas.

In recent years Arnold has focused more on philanthropy. In 2008, he and wife Laura, founded the Laura and John Arnold Foundation, that funds a variety of causes in areas including criminal justice and education.

Arnold also was among those wealthy individuals who was part of Warren Buffett's "The Giving Pledge," pledging to give away 75 percent of his wealth over his lifetime.

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) ? Inside a hot, cramped room in the Somali capital, 10 sweating children sat on wooden desks, not unlike those found in schools. These boys, though, were not in class. They were staring at a small TV and tightly gripping video-game controllers.

Video games are the new rage in Somalia, a first-world entertainment option for teenage boys that wasn't permitted when ultraconservative al-Shabab militants controlled the capital. The insurgents ? who were pushed out of Mogadishu last year by African Union and Somali troops ? banned recreational pleasures like movies and Nintendo.

With the militants gone, Somali teens and boys are bingeing on entertainment systems like Sony's PlayStation, a development with both positive and negative aspects.

Some parents say the video games are helping to keep teens off the street, which in turn lowers the chances they might be recruited by al-Shabab. But many teens admit to skipping class to practice their gaming skills.

"I spend half of my day here. The video games are fascinating," said Abdirizak Muse, a 16-year-old who dropped out of his Mogadishu school in early 2011 after al-Shabab militants dug trenches around it.

Among the positive changes in Mogadishu since al-Shabab's ouster are new restaurants, a vibrant beach front, the reopening of the national theater and video-game parlors.

Mohamed Deq Abdullahi, a father of two teens, watched his boys play a soccer video game in a sweltering parlor on a recent sunny day. He sees the boys' new hobby as a beneficial development.

"This is his daylong activity because I don't want him get bored and go to war," Abdullahi said. "The busier they stay the more tired they get and the more they ignore violence."

During the Islamist uprising in 2006 that gave way to the al-Shabab militia, schools were prime recruitment sources for militants seeking to bolster their ranks. Hundreds, likely thousands, of children were lured into combat.

While video-game shops where teens can pay a fee to play by the hour are popular, the minority of more affluent Somalis are buying game systems for home. Muse Haji, a father of six, bought a system for his kids.

"For us it's a choice between the lesser evil and the bigger evil," he said. "Instead of my children going out and being radicalized and used as human bombs, it's better for me that they stay at homes and play games.

"We focus on nonviolent games such as car racing, soccer and some educational games," he added.

Haji said that like all children of this generation, his children are fanatics about technology, a positive change from generations past when kids were more interested in firing weapons and joining war.

At a video game shop in the Wardhigley district of Mogadishu, dozens of kids waited in line earlier this week to get a chance to play. The shop charges the equivalent of 10 cents for 15 minutes of play. The atmosphere is eerily quiet except for the beeping, whooshing and cheering emanating from the games.

"I have been here almost an hour to wait for my turn. I will play a game of soccer with my friend again," Shafici Osman, 14, said with an air of desperation as he watched his friends play. "I like coming here every day. I am either playing or watching others play. I am happy because my parents approve, and they give me money to play."

The sudden popularity of video games has created a strong business opportunity. Arcade owner Ahmed Aden said he has watched his business quickly grow since opening seven months ago.

"We started with two screens and now we have eight. Our business is booming," he said.

A 2011 U.N. report said that children were being systematically recruited by militants across central and southern Somalia. Schools ? both teachers and students ? were consistent targets by recruiters, the report said.

The report said some 50 schools suspended operations in south-central Somalia because of growing demands from militia groups as schools were destroyed and damaged during clashes between insurgents and government and African Union troops.

Ali Abdi, a 15-year-old, said he was trained to fight with al-Shabab, but after returning home for a visit his mother wouldn't let him return to the militia. Abdi's brother opened an arcade, where Abdi now happily spends his time. He plans to return to school when militants no longer recruit from classrooms.

"Many of my friends are unlucky and have taken part in the violence in the country. Some of them have died. Others are carrying guns around. In some ways, video games have saved my life," Abdi said.

(AP) ? A disgruntled Yahoo shareholder questioned the qualifications and integrity of recently hired CEO Scott Thompson after exposing a misrepresentation about the executive's education.

The fabrication confirmed Thursday by Yahoo Inc. gives New York hedge fund manager Daniel Loeb more artillery as he tries to topple a board of directors favored by Thompson, who became CEO of the troubled Internet company four months ago.

Loeb, whose fund Third Point owns a 5.8 percent stake in Yahoo, gained more leverage when he discovered Thompson doesn't have a bachelor's degree in computer science from a small college in Easton, Massachusetts, as Yahoo stated in a regulatory filing last week.

Thompson only has an accounting degree from Stonehill College, an accomplishment that Yahoo also listed in the filing. The accounting degree was the only one listed in Thompson's resume last year by eBay Inc. when he was still running that company's PayPal payment service. He graduated in 1979, according to Stonehill's website.

Yahoo confirmed Thompson's credentials had been exaggerated in the recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The company, which is based in Sunnyvale, California, brushed off the distortion as an "inadvertent error."

But Loeb pounced on the misinformation as a violation of Yahoo's code of ethics and called for an independent investigation to determine whether Thompson had misled the company's board about his technology credentials. He also cited the mix-up as an example of Yahoo's poor corporate governance.

"If Mr. Thompson embellished his academic credentials we think that it 1) undermines his credibility as a technology expert and 2) reflects poorly on the character of the CEO who has been tasked with leading Yahoo at this critical juncture," Loeb wrote in a letter to Yahoo's board on Thursday. "Now more than ever Yahoo investors need a trustworthy CEO."

In the past, other companies have suspended or fired executives who were caught lying on their resumes.

Yahoo hired Thompson to reverse years of financial lethargy that set in at the company even as more advertising shifted to the Internet. The funk has weighed on Yahoo's stock, which has been hovering between $10 and $20 for most of the last three years. Yahoo shares fell 27 cents to close at $15.40 on Thursday. That's well below the $33 per share that stockholders could have gotten in May 2008 if the board had accepted a takeover offer from Microsoft Corp.

The company stood behind Thompson in its statement. "This in no way alters that fact that Mr. Thompson is a highly qualified executive with a successful track record leading large consumer technology companies," Yahoo said. "Under Mr. Thompson's leadership, Yahoo is moving forward to grow the company and drive shareholder value."

Tensions between Loeb and Thompson escalated since late March when Yahoo appointed three new directors to its board. In doing so, Yahoo snubbed Loeb, who had been lobbying for a board seat along with three allies who he believes have the skills necessary to help Yahoo rebound from its long-running struggles. At the time, Thompson made it clear that he and the Yahoo committee overseeing the search for new directors had concluded Loeb wasn't the best candidate.

Loeb is waging a campaign to persuade Yahoo's shareholders to elect him and his allies to the board at the company's annual meeting. The date of that meeting still hasn't been set.

Besides ripping Thompson, Loeb also sought to discredit Patti Hart, one of the Yahoo directors he wants bounced from the board. Hart led the committee that recommended Yahoo's new appointments to the board.

In his letter, Loeb noted that Yahoo's recent SEC filing says Hart holds a bachelor's degree in marketing and economics from Illinois State University. In its response, Yahoo clarified Hart received a bachelor's degree in business administration with specialties in marketing and economics.

Thompson, 54, has mostly cut costs to boost profits since taking over as Yahoo's CEO. Last month, he laid off about 2,000 employees, or 14 percent of the workforce, in the biggest payroll purge in Yahoo's 17-year history. He also disclosed plans to close about 50 Yahoo services that haven't been attracting enough users or generating enough revenue.

He has made modest progress on other financial fronts. Yahoo registered its first year-over-year increase in quarterly net revenue since 2008 during the three months ending in March.

Even though he doesn't have a computer science degree, Thompson has a background in technology. He served as PayPal's chief technology officer for three years before being promoted to the payment service's president in 2008. He also previously worked as chief technology officer at credit- and debit-card processor Visa USA.

Once you have your pup?s breed, then you have to take into account what sort of puppy food will likely be best for it. The truth is, there are several varieties of food for dogs but some types will be better for the health of your canine than others. Dry dog food is very common amid dog owners as it is often thought to be significantly more healthy for puppies than typical puppy food. It also often times is a lot more expensive too. One more thing you?ll need to consider after you?ve got your dog is just how or if you are training it. Just how screwed are we?

Are we heading or more like Brave New World or 1984, both dystopia function completely different. Or is it combination of both.

Explain your reasoning.

Brave New World:
Addiction to drugs.
No one born, everyone cloned.
No marriage.
No love
Conditioning that begins at youth.
Families considered wrong, and outdated, and those who choose to only sleep with one person, is ostracised and thrown in Reservations.

1984:
Very authoritarian
Dissent is rooted out and crushed.
Watched every single minute.
Never ending wars.
Rampant jingoism.
Control of all media.

We help the multi-nationals
when they cry out protect us.
The locals scream and shout a bit,
but we don?t let that affect us.
We?re here to lend a helping hand
in case they don?t elect us.
How dare they buy our products
yet still they don?t respect us.

'Fifty Shades of Grey': Experts Cast Christian Grey

Robert Pattinson, Ian Somerhalder, Ryan Gosling are fan favorites to play the dark and mysterious character in E L James' novel.
By Christina Garibaldi

People just can't stop talking about "Fifty Shades of Grey." E L James has set the literary world on fire with as erotic novel that explores the relationship between a dark and mysterious guy named Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, an innocent college graduate.

The guilty-pleasure book features characters that James created in her "Twilight" fan fiction, and it's now being made into a feature film. That, of course, has had Hollywood buzzing with casting rumors about who could play the role of Christian Grey.

Fans of the trilogy already have strong opinions about the part, so MTV News caught up with some experts for their take.

"Christian definitely needs to be clean-cut, but extremely sexy when disheveled," Alison Genet of Twifans.com told MTV News. "I wouldn't choose a man that is overly chiseled. No juicehead gorillas need apply. Hair that can be neatly brushed, but when playing, it's loose and wild like Johnny Depp hair. Not super short."

Of course, the physical look of the actor has to fit, but Christian is also a complex individual, and most fans want an actor who can pull off all his many dimensions.

"I just think that the actor needs to be able to portray being so intense," Mags Vazquez from , "But also showing that vulnerability that he has in reality."

Casting rumors for the part of Christian have been heating up as of late, with names like "Twilight's" own Robert Pattinson coming up. So, do fans want to see Pattinson make the transition from Edward Cullen to Christian Grey?

"There's the side that first fell in love with the characters as part of 'Twilight' fan fiction and can only see Robert Pattinson as Christian and/or Kristen Stewart as Ana," Lisa Parker from FiftyShadesFilm.com explained. "Would we be disappointed if he/she/they were cast? Absolutely not."

Others disagree, however. "In regards to Robert Pattinson, I would like to see them move away from 'Twilight' so it can get its own identity," Crissy Maier of Laters, Baby! said.

Well, if Pattinson doesn't land the role, there's a chance another vampire could step in: "Vampire Diaries" star Ian Somerhalder.

"I think Ian seems like a good fit visually, I haven't watched 'Vampire Diaries,' but what I hear about his acting skills there, I'm hearing good things," Maier said.

Parker agreed, revealing that her readers have been backing Somerhalder since he expressed interest in the role during an interview with Ryan Seacrest.

"We're excited to see actors step up and say they would be interested in playing the leading man," Parker said, adding, "With Ian Somerhalder being the first and a popular candidate judging from our Twitter timeline."

These super fans have suggestions of their own though, ranging from Matt Bomer to "Man of Steel" star Henry Cavill. Not surprisingly, Ryan Gosling is also a favorite.

"We are fans of the love story too, so we know exactly what qualities 'FSOG' fans see in different actors and actresses that make them appealing for the roles," Parker said. "Have you seen the Dunhill London ads featuring Henry Cavill? Do they not scream 'Fifty'? Have you seen Ryan Gosling's GQ photo shoot? Grey silk tie anyone?"

Genet of Twifanscom agreed, saying Gosling's undeniable charm could make him the perfect Christian Grey: "Ryan Gosling, Ryan Gosling, and Ryan Gosling. Imaging him in jeans hung low on the hip."

"The one thing we know for sure is that with E L James as a collaborative partner in the casting process, we are confident that she will do what's in the best interest of her famously loved characters." Parker said.

Who do you think should play Christian Grey in the "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie? Let us know in the comments!

The title pretty much sums it up. Jason Segel and Emily Blount are madly in love, but her career causes the delay. It gets predictably, mildly complicated from there. This is a mediocre chick-flick that tries to spice things up with lots of dick jokes and four-letter words. It is mildly amusing, but nothing about the dialogue, situations or performances elevates into any memorable category.

GAY ANGLE: If you?re a Segel fan, his soft body is used for comic effect more than once.

Jerry Williams reviewed movies for WTVR-TV for 14 years and for Style Weekly for 10 years. When he launched his own website in 1998 at TVJerry.com, he took his reviews to the Internet. Through those hundreds of reviews, Jerry kept his sexual orientation muted. So, he's excited to be adding "gay angles" to his postings for GayRVA.com.
