Edd's Home Fish Care: In Support of Practical Fishkeeping's Big ...

Practical Fishkeeping, the UK's leading fishkeeping magazine have recently started their latest campaign - Big Fish Campaign.? This is in reaction to the ever present theme in the industry where people are supplied with their pet fish and unfortunately aren't provided with?correct information, in particular to knowing the adult size?that the fish can obtain.? This normally means that the fish outgrows the home aquarium and the owners are needing to find a new home for it otherwise the fish will only suffer.

The Big Fish Campaign is run in partnership with British & Irish Association of Zoos & Aquariums.? All aquarium fish should never be released into local water systems as they will become an invasive pest, and in the instances of these 'tank busting'?fish, owners have been delivering them to zoos and aquariums for them to take on board.? However, as this is an increasing issue, the zoos and aquariums are coming to a point where they can no longer take on board any more unwanted fish as they are reaching capacity.

So this campaign is to focus on retailers providing the necessary education to consumers and ensuring the consumer has the necessary aquarium set up for their required fish.? Practical Fishkeeping?have already?began?working with UK retailers (Maidenhead Aquatics?and Pets At Home) and many more are coming on board.

This is a brilliant and worthwhile initiative focusing on the welfare of the animal.? Previously, Practical Fishkeeping ran a campaign to ban selling of?'painted fish'?in the UK, and they became illegal to sell.? As a consumer and fish lover, this totally instilled confidence and trust with my aquatic retailer who were?able to follow guidelines?for fish welfare.

By blogging this in Australia, I hope to raise awareness of these great initiatives happening in the UK.??Thereby retailers and consumers can understand the importance of welfare and education for each little fish that wants to be taken home.

If you need help setting up an aquarium or maintaining one please contact me for a service.
