Risk Factors ? Colorectal Cancer ? FemGuide Women Network


There is not an exact known cause of colorectal cancers however there are certain factors that can put a person at a higher risk of having colorectal cancer. Risk factors cannot explain everything, having one or more of them does not necessarily mean that you will get a disease. Some of the following risk factors can be involved in the development of colorectal cancer.

The risk of getting cancer is greater if you are over the age of 50. More than ninety percent of people who get colorectal cancer are over the age of fifty. Having had cancer at an earlier age increases you chances of having it reoccur.

Having larger and a greater number of polyps also can increase your risk. If you have had cancerous polyps removed in an area of your colon previously, your risk factors increase.
When there is inflammation present in the colon for a long period of time, such as in inflammatory bowel diseases, there is a greater chance of cancer cells to grow and propagate.

Having a family history of cancer can increase your risk of getting cancer.
There are two known inherited types of syndromes that increase the risk for colorectal cancer development. These are known as familial adenomatous polyposis and hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer.
