Did Jackson, Houston have a brief romance?

Reuters, AP

By Courtney Garcia, TODAY.com contributor

The star-crossed and much-scrutinized lives of Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston may have been intertwined beyond public knowledge, as a bodyguard for Jackson is now saying the two pop enigmas had a brief romantic affair in the early '90s.

Determined to prove he is the biological father of Jackson?s youngest child, Blanket, former bodyguard Matt Fiddes made a number of striking claims to UK?s The Sun, including the suggestion that the pop superstars had a two-week fling at Jackson?s Neverland Ranch in 1991, and that Jackson never quite recovered from it.

"They met because they were two of the biggest recording artists on the planet and mixing in the same circles. They instantly connected as kindred spirits because they understood each other?s massive fame,? Fiddes told the Sun on April 29. ?Whitney practically moved into Michael?s ranch and they had a fling like any other young couple. But Michael said later he had always hoped the relationship had gone further, and I know he dreamed of marrying her."

In March, there was speculation that Houston was romantically linked to Jackson?s older brother, Jermaine.?The Sun also reported that the affair took place while Jermaine was married to Hazel Gordy, daughter of Motown founder, Berry Gordy. Jackson?s sister, La Toya confirmed the rumor on March 5 when she appeared on the "The Talk," saying, "He [Jermaine] has admitted that they had an affair."

Fiddes further elaborated to the Sun, commenting that Michael "was furious when he heard she had also slept with Jermaine, but this didn?t stop him holding a candle for her his whole life."

The 32-year-old British martial arts expert and fitness instructor met Jackson in 1998, and soon became his bodyguard and confidant until his passing in 2009.? Fiddes insists that Jackson asked him for a sperm donation in 2001 because he wanted to "create an athletic child," and that 10-year-old Blanket (real name Prince Michael II) was the result of his endowment. Though not seeking custody of the boy, Fiddes is aiming to bring the paternity issue to court in order to have DNA testing carried out and obtain visitation rights.

As further testament to his close ties with the late superstar, Fiddes has made a number of other allegations about the singer, including that he was "anorexic" and?"impotent" due to heavy use of drugs and alcohol. He claims Jackson?s body was riddled with needle marks, and that he was ashamed of his balding head and had a closet?containing more than?hundred wigs.

Added Liddes, the last days of the pop icon were sullen. "If he couldn?t get drugs, he would drink. When he announced the 'This Is It' concerts at the O2 in London in 2009, he had downed half a bottle of whisky to cope with the pressure. He was also wearing a bullet-proof vest, petrified he would be assassinated due to the child abuse allegations that haunted him until his dying day."

Though he asserts he spoke to Jackson just three days before his death on June 25, 2009, Liddes was banned from the Jackson family circle following the singer?s passing.

Chris Castle: How Artists Get Paid for Internet Radio: An interview with Mike Huppe, President of SoundExchange (Part 2 of 2)

I had a chance to talk to Mike Huppe, President of SoundExchange, about how artists get paid for the public performance of their recordings. (See Part 1 for the backgrounder). If you are a featured artist or sound recording owner, you can register at www.soundexchange.com This interview is available as a podcast at Arts+Labs Innovation Central.

How many services use the compulsory license and how many people does SoundExchange pay royalties to?

Huppe: Currently, we collect digital performance royalties from about 1,600 services that send SoundExchange monthly reporting logs and payments. We take the data from all those services, clean it up, match it across various algorithms, sort it across numerous payees and then every quarter send out anywhere from 15,000-20,000 checks to all the registrants who come through SoundExchange to collect their money. As of today, we have more than 20,000 rights owner accounts and over 48,000 artist accounts. When the money comes in, we basically split it 50/50. 50 percent of money goes to record labels or whomever owns the master and the other 50 percent goes to the performer -- 45 percent goes to the feature performer and 5 percent to non-featured. We pay performers directly, regardless if they are recouped through their record label.

[That last point is very important because artists, particularly artists who are no longer signed, can be unrecouped and will not be entitled to royalties. SoundExchange pays the statutory royalty to these artists without regard to whether they are recouped under their old or current record deals.]

Where do you see SoundExchange in the next 5 years?

Huppe: I am very excited about where SoundExchange is going. We are a very interesting and unique organization -- certainly unlike any other in this country. We're optimistic about where the music industry is headed and see opportunity for SoundExchange to help digital music services thrive.

SoundExchange is currently the #2 digital revenue source behind iTunes for most record labels in the U.S. We are growing fast because of all the ways music usage is changing. What we do is increasingly being relied on as a revenue stream for performers and record labels alike. SoundExchange checks have become a very real source of income, and it's exciting to hear from those who are grateful for what we do.

Although we squabble over royalty rates with the service providers, we view ourselves as partners that enable music service to do what they do best -- creating new ways to listen and discover music. In the long run, we want them to succeed. It's in their best interest, our best interest and the best interest of the consumer to have a very full and vibrant webcasting market. We want them to create new business models, new ways of listening to music and we feel that SoundExchange enables all of that. We are the back office to a lot of these new business models emerging on the web.

In the next five years, we see ourselves growing, providing an important role in some of these business models and we hope to continue to increasing digital royalty payments (remember we went from $20M in 2005 to $292 million in 2011). One of our main responsibilities is fighting for the long-term value of content -- a battle we will never shy from. We believe that content is critically important, it is the backbone of many music services and what they provide. Content is the blood and sweat of the performers and the investment of the record labels. We are constantly fighting to maximize the value of content so that those folks can get paid for all the revenue they bring to services.

We will also have an authoritative repertoire database in place that will not only be a resource to the industry so that people can go and find out about the ownership of sound recordings, but also to improve the tracking of collections and more timely payments. We are also in the process of rebuilding our technology and distribution platform in order to scale better and handle the explosive growth. Once we complete that platform I believe there are many other services SoundExchange can provide to the industry beyond processing this license. The possibilities are endless.

We are very excited about where we are headed and what we can do for the industry. And again, the fact that we are a non-profit, the fact that our board represents artists, unions, independent labels and major labels really makes us uniquely positioned to do these things for the greater good of the industry.

Tech review: keyboards for the iPad

When the iPad first came out, it was pooh-poohed as an oversized version of the iPod touch, a mere fancy underpowered toy for tech enthusiasts and Apple fans.

But here we are, several years later, and the world?s most popular tablet computer is shaping up to be a decent replacement for a laptop. Though not as powerful as a desktop or laptop, the iPad often feels just as fast because it runs efficiently, letting you use only one app at a time. And hard drive storage is less of an obstacle these days, with cloud computing services like Dropbox or Sugarsync and Apple?s own iCloud storing our data online.

I have been coming around to the idea that most of the stuff I do on a laptop or a PC ? surfing the Web, writing for the Taipei Times, using Facebook, organizing photos ? can be done on an iPad. Safari and YouTube have got Web browsing and videos covered. For word processing, I ditched Microsoft Word long ago for a writer-friendly text editor (Writeroom and iAWriter are both decent apps to try). Facebook?s app does a decent job, and the iPad?s own Photos app has rudimentary editing capabilities. (Heck, now you can even get Adobe Photoshop for iOS and Android).

Of course, for an iPad to replace your laptop, you?ll need one thing: a real, physical keyboard. No matter how cool touch screens are, and despite the great leaps that have been made in voice recognition technology (with programs like Siri and Dragon Dictation), nothing beats the clackety-clack of a physical keyboard when it comes to comfort, accuracy and speed.

There are plenty of keyboard options available for iPad users, whether you?re a casual typist who just can?t get used to tapping on glass, or if you?re an office road warrior looking for a more lightweight and flexible computing option.

Here?s a look at some of the better keyboard accessories for iPad currently available in Taiwan. All products reviewed here connect to the iPad wirelessly using a Bluetooth connection.

STAND-ALONE KEYBOARDS

I discovered that the best solution for turning my iPad into a work computer was already laying around the house. At home, we use the Apple Wireless Keyboard (NT$2,390) with a Mac desktop computer, and it works like a charm with the iPad.

Apple?s keyboard is a natural choice for iPad typists. It has standard-size keys and good ergonomics. The smooth chiclet buttons, which are similar to the ones on Apple?s Macbook laptops, have the right feel: they?re not too squishy and have a smooth, satisfying click.

But if you?re going to use the Apple Wireless Keyboard with an iPad, a case and stand are a must. I found Opt?s KeePad (NT$1,080) to be a great solution. This cleverly designed faux-leather case, tailored especially for Apple?s keyboard, folds out with an attached stand sewn inside on which you can prop up your iPad. The KeePad holds the iPad steadily in either landscape (with the screen longer from left to right) or portrait views, and it was easy to adjust the viewing angle.

The KeePad case feels sturdy and well built, but it?s light enough not to be a burden in your backpack or bag. Combined with the Apple Keyboard and iPad 2, it weighs around 1.1kg, the same weight of the 11-inch Macbook Air.

Now, you might think carrying a separate keyboard case sounds like a hassle compared to the all-in-one form factor of a laptop. But this can also be a boon for travelers: you can use the iPad as a tablet on the bus or plane, and then as a laptop when you get to your hotel.

'Dark Knight Rises' Viral Campaign To Unveil New Trailer

The Weekly Rising takes a closer look at how Warner Bros. is getting fans involved.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

The massive amount of buzz that preceded the release of "The Dark Knight" in large part came out of the film's intricate viral marketing campaign. For the third and final film of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, Warner Bros. has mostly opted out of a big viral effort, favoring sparse but mostly traditional material releases.

But with the arrival of the final "Dark Knight Rises" trailer, dedicated fans will find that a virtual hunt for the anonymous vigilante known as "The Batman" is on, and a new viral campaign is in full swing.

The journey begins at the website for the film. There you will find a full dossier on John Doe (a.k.a. The Batman) and the charges he is accused of: six counts of first degree murder, three counts of kidnapping, and 15 counts of aggravated assault of a peace officer; the list goes on.

The premise of the campaign is that in preparation for the upcoming Harvey Dent Day, the mayor of Gotham City has ordered a "redoubling" of efforts to catch Batman and anyone supporting his return. It's important to remember that in the world of "The Dark Knight Rises," this is all happening seven years after Batman took the fall for Harvey Dent's crimes and death.

The site also includes an extensive list of real-world locations where "graffiti related to movement in support of the vigilante's return" is supposedly located. The spots appear around the globe and include dozens of locations in the U.S. alone.

Loyal fans have already been tweeting and emailing from the locations listed on the site, and each location marked off the list has revealed a single frame of film from the upcoming trailer. The stills have been appearing one-by-one here, so if you scroll fast enough, maybe you can make yourself a handy flipbook.

As with the previous viral campaigns for the series, it's likely that we'll have to wait until most or all of the frames have been restored to the online film strip.

Be sure to check back here throughout the next few days, as we keep an eye on the campaign and bring you the first sign of the final "Dark Knight Rises" trailer.

Check out everything we've got on "The Dark Knight Rises."

Former N.H. beauty queen arrested for attacking boyfriend

(Credit: AP Photo/Manchester Police Department)

A former Miss New Hampshire USA title holder was arrested Wednesday for allegedly assaulting her boyfriend, according to police.

An argument between 26-year-old beauty queen Nicole Houde and her boyfriend, 33-year-old Scott Nickerson, turned violent when Houde allegedly began punching, kicking, scratching and biting Nickerson, police said.

Manchester Police Sgt. Todd Boucher said Nickerson accused Houde of having an affair. The two began arguing, and Nickerson took Houde's cell phone. When he refused to give it back, things got ugly, police said.

Houde, who was crowned Miss New Hampshire USA in 2010, was arrested at work and charged with simple assault.

Two drugs better than one to treat youth with type 2 diabetes, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Apr. 29, 2012) ? Programs to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes in high-risk adults would result in fewer people developing diabetes and lower health care costs over time, researchers conclude in a new study funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Prevention programs that apply interventions tested in the landmark Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) clinical trial would also improve quality of life for people who would otherwise develop type 2 diabetes. The analysis of costs and outcomes in the DPP and its follow-up study is published in the April 2012 issue of Diabetes Care and online March 22.

The DPP showed that lifestyle changes (reduced fat and calories in the diet and increased physical activity) leading to modest weight loss reduced the rate of type 2 diabetes in high-risk adults by 58 percent, compared with placebo. Metformin reduced diabetes by 31 percent. These initial results were published in 2002. As researchers monitored participants for seven more years in the DPP Outcomes Study (DPPOS), they continued to see lower rates of diabetes in the lifestyle and metformin groups compared with placebo. Lifestyle changes were especially beneficial for people age 60 and older.

The economic analysis of the DPP/DPPOS found that metformin treatment led to a small savings in health care costs over 10 years, compared with placebo. (At present, metformin, an oral drug used to treat type 2 diabetes, is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration for diabetes prevention.) The lifestyle intervention as applied in the study was cost-effective, or justified by the benefits of diabetes prevention and improved health over 10 years, compared with placebo.

"Over 10 years, the lifestyle and metformin interventions resulted in health benefits and reduced the costs of inpatient and outpatient care and prescriptions, compared with placebo. From the perspective of the health care payer, these approaches make economic sense," said the study's lead author William H. Herman, M.D., M.P.H., a co-investigator of the DPP Research Group and director of the Michigan Center for Diabetes Translational Research, Ann Arbor.

The DPP enrolled 3,234 overweight or obese adults with blood sugar levels higher than normal but below the threshold for diabetes diagnosis. Participants were randomly assigned to a lifestyle intervention aimed at a 7 percent weight loss and 150 minutes per week of moderate intensity activity, metformin treatment, or placebo pills. The groups taking metformin or placebo pills also received standard lifestyle recommendations.

"We don't often see new therapies that are more effective and at the same time less costly than usual care, as was the case with metformin in the DPP. And while the lifestyle intervention was cost-effective, we would see greater savings if the program were implemented in communities," said Griffin P. Rodgers, M.D., director of the NIH's National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). "This has already been demonstrated in other NIDDK-funded projects, including one in YMCAs, where a lifestyle-change program cost $300 per person per year in a group setting, compared to about $1,400 for one-on-one attention in the DPP."

In the DPP, direct costs over 10 years per participant for the lifestyle and metformin interventions were higher than for placebo ($4,601 lifestyle, $2,300 metformin, and $769 placebo). The higher cost of the lifestyle intervention was due largely to the individualized training those participants received in a 16-session curriculum during the DPP and in group sessions during the DPPOS to reinforce behavior changes.

However, the costs of medical care received outside the DPP, for example hospitalizations and outpatient visits, were higher for the placebo group ($27,468) compared with lifestyle ($24,563) or metformin ($25,616). Over 10 years, the combined costs of the interventions and medical care outside the study were lowest for metformin ($27,915) and higher for lifestyle ($29,164) compared with placebo ($28,236). Throughout the study, quality of life as measured by mobility, level of pain, emotional outlook and other indicators was consistently better for the lifestyle group.

"The DPP demonstrated that the diabetes epidemic, with more than 1.9 million new cases per year in the United States, can be curtailed. We now show that these interventions also represent good value for the money," said study chair David M. Nathan, M.D., director of the Diabetes Research Center at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston.

(AP) ? Eric Lamb was doing safety patrol on a 124-mile yacht race when he spotted a boat that appeared too close to Mexico's Coronado Islands. He never got there.

As his twin-engine boat neared the uninhabited islands just south of San Diego, he stumbled on sailboat shards that were mostly no more than six inches long strewn over about two square miles. He saw a small refrigerator, a white seat cushion and empty containers of yogurt and soy milk.

Over several hours, a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter directed him in his search and led him to two dead bodies floating with their backs up, badly scraped and bruised. The Coast Guard recovered a third body and the fourth member of the crew was missing Monday in California's second deadly accident this month involving an ocean race.

Lamb, 62, said the 37-foot racing yacht looked like it "had gone through a blender."

"It was real obvious it had been hit just because the debris was so small," he said Sunday.

The Coast Guard, Mexican navy and civilian vessels scoured the waters off the shore of both countries for the fourth sailor before suspending their search Sunday evening.

Hundreds of race participants held a moment of silence at the Newport Ocean Sailing Association's award ceremony, many of them stunned and puzzled. Skies were clear and winds were light when the boat went missing on the course from Newport Beach, Calif., to Ensenada.

A GPS race tracking system indicated the Aegean disappeared about 1:30 a.m. PDT (4:30 a.m. EDT) Saturday, said Rich Roberts, a spokesman for the race organizer. Race organizers weren't closely monitoring the race at that hour but a disappearing signal is no cause for alarm because receivers occasionally suffer glitches, he said.

"Somebody may have thought the thing was broken," Roberts said.

Lamb, who has been patrolling the race for eight years as captain for a private company, saw the debris nine hours later, called the Coast Guard, and searched for identifying information. He and a partner found a life raft with a registration number and a panel with the ship's name.

The Coast Guard said conditions were fine for sailing, with good visibility and moderate ocean swells of 6-to-8 feet. Officials have not determined the cause of the accident, and would not speculate on what ship, if any, might have collided with the sailboat.

Race officials said they had few explanations for what may have happened to the Aegean other than it must have collided with a ship like a freighter or tanker that did not see the smaller vessel.

The episode immediately sparked a debate over safety of ocean races.

"Quite honestly, I'm amazed it hasn't happened before," said Lamb. "You get 200 boats out there, they lose their way, and they're just bobbing around."

Gary Jobson, president of the U.S. Sailing Association, said his group will appoint an independent panel to investigate.

"I'm horrified. I've done a lot of sailboat racing and I've hit logs in the water, and I've seen a man go overboard, but this takes the whole thing to a new level," Jobson said. "We need to take a step back and take a deep breath with what we're doing. Something is going wrong here."

Chuck Iverson, commodore of the sailing association, said the collision was a "fluke," noting how common night races are along Mexico's Baja California coast.

The race goes through shipping lanes and it's possible for a large ship to hit a sailboat and not even know it, especially at night, said Roberts, the race spokesman. Two race participants who were in the area at the time the Aegean vanished told The Associated Press they saw or heard a freighter.

The deaths are the first fatalities in the race's 65 years. The race attracted 675 boats at its peak in 1983 before falling on hard times several years ago amid fears of Mexico's drug-fueled violence.

Participation has picked up recently, reaching 213 boats this year. The winner, Robert Lane of Long Beach Yacht Club, finished Saturday in 23 hours, 26 minutes, 40 seconds.

The race attracts sailors of all skills, including some who are new to long distances. The Aegean competed in one of the lower categories, which allows participants to use their motors when winds drop to a certain level.

Two of the dead were William Reed Johnson Jr., 57, of Torrance, Calif., and Joseph Lester Stewart, 64, of Bradenton, Fla. The San Diego County Medical Examiner's office was withholding the name of the third sailor pending notification of relatives.

The Aegean is registered to Theo Mavromatis, 49, of Redondo Beach, Calif. The race sponsor didn't know if he was aboard but Gary Gilpin at Marina Sailing, which rents out the Aegean when Mavromatis isn't using it, said the 49-year-old skipper took the yacht out earlier in the week for the competition.

Gilpin said Mavromatis, an engineer, was an experienced sailor who had won the Newport to Ensenada race in the past.

The deaths come two weeks after five sailors died in the waters off Northern California when their 38-foot yacht was hit by powerful waves, smashed into rocks and capsized during a race. Three sailors survived the wreck and the body of another was quickly recovered. Four remained missing until one body was recovered Thursday.

The accident near the Farallon Islands, about 27 miles west of San Francisco, prompted the Coast Guard to temporarily stop races in ocean waters outside San Francisco Bay. The Coast Guard said the suspension will allow it and the offshore racing community to study the accident and race procedures to determine whether changes are needed to improve safety. U.S. Sailing, the governing body of yacht racing, is leading the safety review, which is expected to be completed within the next month.

A cage is the most important piece of equipment you will need to buy for your new bird. The proper cage can help your bird stay healthy and safe. There are so many types of cages, choosing the right one can be hard for the new bird keeper.. How do you choose the right one?

First, consider the species of bird you intending to keep. If you want to have any type of parakeet, cockatiel or another long tailed bird species, you will need a long cage so that your bird can get plenty of exercise. Ideally, the cage should be long enough so the bird can actually fly from one side to the other. A bird with a stocky body, such as a lovebird or a Senegal parrot, gets plenty of exercise by climbing around in the cage. These birds do well in a cage that is taller than it is wide.

You should then consider the size of the cage. While usually you should plan to buy the biggest cage you can afford for your bird, a newly weaned handfed baby bird may feel lost and frightened in a large cage. A young bird also may have trouble locating food and water dishes. If you can afford to do so, it is a good idea to buy a small cage for your baby bird?s first few months and switch it to a larger cage when it is older.

Another thing to keep in mind when you are selecting your bird?s cage is the spacing between the cage bars. A great looking ?400 cage isn?t very useful if your bird can fit through the bars! If you are thinking about using a cage with wire mesh, you should compare the size of the hole in the mesh with the size of your bird?s head before you make your selection. A cage made with one inch mesh is just the right size for a cockatiel to stick a head through. Instead of pulling their heads back in through the same hole, cockatiels have been known to bend their necks into a ?U? shape and stick their heads into a different hole.

Once you have decided on the cage size and bar spacing, you should consider a few other aspects of bird cage design. Take a look at the cage tray. When you pull it out to clean it, is there a grate in the cage to keep the bird from escaping? Is the tray deep enough to catch most of the mess your bird makes? Even if the cage has a deep tray, you still may find that your bird scatters a lot of seed hulls and feathers on the floor if there is no cage apron. While you can place your cage in a plastic apron base or cover the bottom of the cage with a cloth apron, a built in metal apron is a nice feature.

Finally, don?t forget to take a look at the cage cups. There should be a way for you to easily access the cups without reaching into the cage through the main door. If you are buying a cage for a bigger bird, the cups should actually bolt to the cage unless you want to spend every morning and afternoon for the next 50 years reaching for cups that your bird has tossed onto the bottom of the cage.

If you a replacing a cage for an older parrot type bird, some owners have told me it is important to get a cage of a similar colour. They believe that a bird that has been used to a white painted cage, won?t adapt easily to a metal coloured cage.

Samsung Galaxy Note Hype

I seen too many threads like this, you guys could at least watch or read reviews on it and find out. You don't have to be interested in it if you don't think its good.

Let's just say, with HD screen at that size, I don't even have to use the zoom function to view website, it can display the full site. The Wacom pen might be more for business users, but is pretty nifty.

PM 'deeply saddened' by murder of aid worker

Prime Minister David Cameron paid tribute to the kidnapped British Red Cross worker found dead in Pakistan, calling his murder a "shocking and merciless act".

Cameron said he "was deeply saddened" to hear about the death of Khalil Dale, and accused the attackers of having "no respect for human life and the rule of law."

"This was a shocking and merciless act," added the leader.

"Khalil Dale has dedicated many years of his life to helping some of the most vulnerable people in the world and my thoughts today are with his friends and family," he said in a statement.

London had tried tirelessly to secure the release of the 60-year-old since his kidnapping in Baluchistan province in January, Foreign Secretary William Hague said in an earlier statement.

"This was a senseless and cruel act, targeting someone whose role was to help the people of Pakistan, and causing immeasurable pain to those who knew Mr Dale," said Hague.

The Red Cross announced earlier Sunday that Dale, a health programme manager, had been found dead in Quetta, Pakistan, four months after he was abducted by armed men.

The mutilated body of Khalil Dale, 60, was dumped in a bag in an orchard on the outskirts of Quetta, the capital of the insurgency-hit southwestern province of Baluchistan.

A note claiming to be from militant group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan was found with the body, senior local police official Tariq Manzoor told AFP.

The group said in the note that "our demands were not met (and) we have stuffed his (Dale's) body in a bag after slaughtering him. We will soon release a video of his beheading," according to Manzoor.

Dale, a British Muslim who had been managing a health programme in Quetta for almost a year, was abducted in the city on January 5 by eight masked gunmen, who forced him from his car at gunpoint as he returned home from work.

A source close to the case said the captors had demanded a ransom of $30 million.

The International Committee of the Red Cross "condemns in the strongest possible terms this barbaric act", said its Director-General Yves Daccord.

"All of us at the ICRC and at the British Red Cross share the grief and outrage of Khalil's family and friends."

"We are devastated," Daccord said, adding that the aid worker -- who had worked in Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq -- was a "trusted and very experienced Red Cross staff member".

Pakistan's government also condemned "the barbaric act" and vowed "to bring perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice".

Riffat Hussain, a police surgeon at Bolan Medical College in Quetta, where the aid worker's body was taken, told AFP that Dale had been decapitated, but doctors had stitched his head back on to his body.

He is believed to have been killed some 12-14 hours before his body was discovered, the surgeon said.

"There were no signs of any torture on his body but different body joints were dislocated" when he was stuffed into the bag, the surgeon added.

Police official Manzoor told AFP: "His body was found in a bag in an apple orchard on the outskirts of Quetta on Sunday morning."

He said police had difficulty identifying Dale as he had grown a beard, but staff from the ICRC had confirmed the remains were his.

Baluchistan is plagued by a separatist insurgency, sectarian violence and Taliban militants.

Local rebels rose up in 2004 demanding political autonomy and a greater share of profits from the region's natural oil, gas and mineral resources.

Kidnappings are rife in parts of the province, where criminals looking for ransoms snatch foreigners and locals, sometimes passing their hostages on to Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked groups.

In February 2009, John Solecki, the local head of the UN refugee agency (UNHCR), was snatched at gunpoint in Quetta, with his driver killed during the abduction. Solecki was released after nearly nine weeks.

In Baluchistan, the ICRC mainly focuses on health programmes and supports several medical centres, including a hospital.

The ICRC had announced a reduction of its activities in Pakistan just days before Dale's abduction with the closure of three of its centres in the restive northwest.

But after the kidnapping the organisation vowed to continue its work in the troubled country.

Best Buy Connect no longer accepting new activations, service to end June 1st

Image

Remember Best Buy Connect? If so, you'll soon have a few more megabytes of humanized DDR3 freed up, as it appears that the retail giant is ready to put the kibosh on its own branded mobile broadband service nearly two years after it was first unveiled. According to the internal memo shown in the above screenshot, new activations are no longer allowed effective immediately, and the service for legacy customers will be cut off on the first of June.

So why the change of heart? Apparently Connect is the victim of a reshuffling of priorities, and the company determined that it "can achieve greater growth by delivering mobile broadband support in ways other than an exclusive Best Buy-branded service." Of course, this is bound to upset more than a handful of folks who have been relying on Connect for their data needs, and the retailer isn't leaving them completely in the dark: to help smooth out the transition, all Early Termination Fees will be waived, and all customers will receive a $125 or $150 gift card via email to curb the cost of moving to a different carrier. WiMAX Connect users, additionally, will also be given the option to switch over to Clear service. We're still awaiting official confirmation from Best Buy -- as of this moment, the official website remains up and running as if it's none the wiser -- but we'll update as soon as we hear more.

[Thanks, Anonymous]

In tough times, stadium gravy train rolls on

ATLANTA (AP) ? The Atlanta Falcons didn't have a pick in the first round of the NFL draft.

Not to worry.

They're on the verge of landing something far more valuable than some stud running back or fearsome-hitting linebacker ? a new stadium costing nearly a billion dollars.

The economy may be wobbling along, struggling to break free of the worst downturn since the Great Depression, but the stadium business is doing just fine, thank you.

A few days ago, they broke ground on a new palace for the San Francisco 49ers. The good folks in Los Angeles are just clamoring to plop down $800 million or so if the NFL will give them another chance. And now, it seems, the Falcons are all but assured of getting a retractable-roof stadium in the not-so-distant future.

Never mind that the Georgia Dome is just two decades old.

"I used to think, 'This had got to be the end of it. Everyone has a new stadium now. We don't need anymore,'" said Rick Eckstein, a professor of sociology at Villanova University who wrote a book about the public financing of privately controlled stadiums. "But the life span of these places just keeps getting shorter and shorter."

What should be getting shorter and shorter is our patience.

It's time ? way past time, actually ? for this fiscal insanity to end. If an owner such as Atlanta's Arthur Blank (estimated net worth: $1.3 billion) wants a new stadium, he needs to pull out his checkbook and pay for it himself.

In case he hasn't noticed, the rest of us are busted.

Forget the obvious, that the last thing a city or state needs to be doing in these tough times is chipping in to build a new stadium. We won't even bring up that it might be more useful to repair all those potholes that have grown to the size of craters, or hire back some of the laid-off police officers who kept those bumpy streets a little safer, or reopen schools that had to be shuttered because there wasn't enough money to turn on the lights.

Instead, we're going to talk about the cold, hard numbers: stadiums and arenas are bad for business.

The next economist who says that building a new sports facility makes financial sense to the public at large will be the first. There seems to be unanimous consensus among those who aren't on the payroll of some owner or politician that no matter how you crunch the numbers, a stadium will drain more dollars out of a community than it ever pumps in. The only real benefit comes right at the beginning, from the flush of the construction dollars that are needed to throw the place up. After that, it's a wash at best, and probably a net loss.

There's only a handful of people ? owners, players, team employees, maybe a few businesses around the new facility ? that get any real benefit. For the most part, whatever dollars are being spent at the game are coming out of the same entertainment pot. Money that might've been spent on a nice dinner or to take in a movie winds up in the team's pocket.

That's why owners are unwilling to build their own stadiums or arenas without at least some government assistance. They know it's a money-losing proposition, camouflaged behind vague promises of how it will help the community in ways that can't be measured with pure numbers.

"If the objective of spending public money is to induce economic growth, or increase per-capita income, or raise employment, building a stadium is not a good idea," said Jonathan Willner, a professor of economics at Oklahoma City University who specializes in the business of sports. "It just doesn't pay off nearly as well as much less sexier things like, how good is the school system? How good is the highway system? How good is the airport? Those are things that actually show up in the studies."

Still, local politicians keep falling all over themselves to spend millions of our dollars to replace stadiums that are still perfectly useful (such as the Georgia Dome) or have truly have outlived their usefulness (we're looking at you, decrepit Candlestick Park, soon-to-be-former home of the 49ers).

Why?

"The infrastructure is crumbling, schools are shutting down and taxes are going up, but there's still this culture and mystique about sports," Eckstein said. "It's got a grip on us. People are able to manipulate that to make us do things, some crazy things."

There are pockets of hope. In Minnesota, resistance to building a new stadium for the Vikings has been fierce ? so much so that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell popped in the other day to deliver a not-so-subtle message. He surely let it be known that he's got Los Angeles on speed dial, ready to send them another team if the Land of a Thousand Lakes won't agree to pay for more than half of a $1 billion stadium that owner Zygi Wilf (estimated net worth: $1.3 billion) just has to have.

Here's how Minnesotans should respond: Hey, Zygi, you come up with the bulk of the money. After all, you're going to be the prime beneficiary of a new stadium, which will surely send the value of your franchise ? along with your net worth ? soaring even higher. If you see things differently, take a hike.

While plenty of loyal fans would undoubtedly be heartsick over losing their beloved Vikings, they'll survive. Just ask the city that now has its eye on your team. Los Angeles lost not one but two NFL franchises (the Rams AND the Raiders) in one swoop during the 1990s. Did L.A. fall apart? Hardly. Same for Seattle, which hasn't missed a beat since its NBA team, the Sonics, bolted to Oklahoma City because they didn't get a new arena.

This is the great ruse that owners, politicians and a few very influential people in most of our major metropolises have been able to pull off. They've persuaded us that we'll be less of a city, and therefore not quite as important as people, if we don't have a big league team in our midst. Over the last 20 years, the tab for building and renovating facilities for the NFL, Major League Baseball and the NBA stands at roughly $27 billion, much of it our money.

Well, it's time for the gravy train to stop.

If our favorite team wants to leave because we won't hand over the keys to the city vault, good riddance.

Most of the games are on TV anyway.

Murdoch: Hacking scandal changed my entire company

LONDON (AP) ? Rupert Murdoch used his testimony before a U.K. inquiry on Thursday to portray himself as the victim, not perpetrator, of a cover-up over phone hacking ? a bold claim unlikely to be accepted by those suing his company for invading their privacy.

The 81-year-old media magnate apologized. He said he had failed. He noted that the corporate cleanup of the British phone hacking scandal had cost his New York-based News Corp. hundreds of millions of dollars and transformed its culture.

"I failed, and I'm sorry about it," Murdoch said, adding later: "We are now a new company altogether."

Murdoch's two days of testimony, which began Wednesday, marked his attempt to corral the scandal that has rocked Britain, tainted senior politicians, prompted top police commanders and media executives to resign and affected large swathes of his media empire.

It boiled over in July after it became clear that journalists at Murdoch's now-shuttered News of the World tabloid routinely broke the law in pursuit of scoops, with Murdoch-friendly police and politicians turning a blind eye to a litany of abuses including illegal espionage and bribery.

The scandal prompted Prime Minister David Cameron to order a wide-ranging judicial inquiry into the country's media, which has heard from a range of journalists and public figures. Murdoch's testimony was the most hotly anticipated thus far.

Murdoch's words, delivered under oath, offered an unusual public glimpse into the media mogul's personality, alternately combative and contrite. Murdoch showed the occasional sign of annoyance, but pointed questions about his alleged vast political influence and business interests were largely parried with firm denials and touches of dry wit.

A few new revelations tumbled out, among them his admission Thursday that his dramatic decision to shut down the 168-year-old News of the World ? the Sunday paper at the center of the scandal ? was an impulse move. He said he snapped his fingers and "it was done like that."

"I panicked. But I'm glad I did," Murdoch said, explaining that he'd long wanted to replace the paper with a Sunday edition of The Sun, his top-selling tabloid.

Murdoch also revealed that he had been taken aback at the size of the 2008 payout made to phone hacking victim and former England soccer manager Gordon Taylor ? testimony at odds with what his son James Murdoch told the inquiry earlier in the week.

The elder Murdoch's admission was important, because critics have alleged that the $1 million settlement to Taylor ? 10 to 20 times larger than a typical payout for breach of privacy ? was intended to bury the hacking scandal.

If James Murdoch knew that the settlement was outrageously large when he signed off on it, it would strengthen the argument that the 39-year-old media executive knew that the payout was aimed at hiding wrongdoing.

The younger Murdoch said Tuesday that, at the time, he had no way of knowing whether the sum was particularly large. But the elder Murdoch expressed no such doubts Thursday.

"The size seemed incredible," Murdoch said. "It still does seem incredible."

Overall, Murdoch stuck to the line that he and his son were deliberately kept in the dark by subordinates about the illegal behavior at the News of the World.

"The senior executives were all misinformed, and shielded from anything that was going on there," he told the inquiry. "I do blame one or two people for that."

He didn't name them, but he identified one as "a clever lawyer" who shared drinks with many of the journalists involved ? a transparent reference to News International legal manager Tom Crone.

Crone, in a statement, called Murdoch's testimony "a shameful lie."

Murdoch seemed to catch Lord Justice Brian Leveson, the head of the media inquiry, off guard with his statement that "a journalist doing a favor for someone and getting a favor back is pretty much everyday practice."

"It's a common thing in life, well beyond journalism, for people to say: 'I'll scratch your back if you scratch my back,'" Murdoch said.

The comment came as a surprise because Murdoch and his son James had spent much of their testimony denying that they ever traded favors with top politicians.

Observers say Murdoch largely dodged the potential pitfalls during his testimony.

"Rupert got the best of them," said Murdoch biographer Michael Wolff.

Murdoch may have performed well, but storm clouds still linger over News Corp.

U.K. police, parliamentary and regulatory investigations into the company are ongoing on both sides of the Atlantic. Just as Murdoch finished testifying, British broadcasting regulator Ofcom announced it was expanding its investigation into his U.K. satellite broadcaster British Sky Broadcasting Group PLC.

At the same time, British lawmakers announced that they would publish their long-delayed report into the phone-hacking scandal on May 1.

Murdoch's testimony Thursday appeared to have little effect on News Corp.'s New York-listed shares, which were up slightly, 0.6 percent, at $19.38. At the height of the phone-hacking scandal last summer, the company's stock price had sunk to $13.38.

Stop the Google Drive Terms of Service Bogeyman hunt

Everyone loves to stir the pot and engage in some solid fear-mongering whenever it comes to privacy on the Internet, especially when it comes to Google products and services, but it needs to stop, because all we're getting are biased voices that benefit from having people riled up about any potential problem. As we explained back when Google first united its privacy policies, there is huge value to be had for you by Google using this language, and now it seems we need to give a refresher on the other side of that equation: the possible threats. Of course, there are those out there already trying to paint Google's TOS as trouble, as we told you earlier today.Context

Before we take a look at what people see as a problem, let's just take a look at the points of Google's policy that continually get overlooked. First, Google expressly states in its Terms of Service:?

That's pretty plain English stating that what is yours is yours, no troubles there.?

Second (and most commonly overlooked) is from Googles Privacy Policy, which states:?

So, if you take those two things together, here's what you get (and this applies to Google Drive and most other Google products): you own your data, and no one gets to see your data unless you say so, someone higher in your organization says so (domain admin), or a judge says so (legal purposes). The external processing seems like an outlier, but really that's to cover hooked in services. For example, Google has to be able to share your data with Aviary if you have the app connected to your Google Drive.?

Out of context

While people tend to ignore, or downplay the importance of the above sections of Google's terms and policy, there is one piece of the Terms of Service that is always quoted. The part of the TOS that is always taken out of context is this:?

If you didn't have the context from above, that sounds pretty scary, right? It is often said that this part of the TOS underminds the pieces quoted above, because it is "too vague", which is only true insofar as the terms must cover 60+ products, but actually it is quite the opposite. Legal experts claim it gives Google too much leeway in using your files, but that simply isn't true given the terms of Google's Privacy Policy.?

The first bunch of verbs ("host, store, reproduce, modify, create?derivative?works") all cover the process of making your content useful. If Google can't host or store your content, it disappears, which is of no help to you. If Google can't reproduce your content, it would be impossible to have the syncing across devices that makes Google Drive, Music, or Photos useful. Modifying and derivative works covers anything from auto-correct in a document to translations or fixing the color of a photograph.?

Then, the last few pieces ("communicate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute") covers being able to share your content, but only?if the requirements are met from the Privacy Policy above. This means that Google can post your photos, videos or docs to Google+, but only if you say so (or for some odd reason a judge says so.) The same goes for e-mail, or even sharing a link.?

The Bogeyman vs actual harm

Knowing all of that, what exactly is the problem? The problem is that people want to find fault without due cause. People love to talk about the potential threats without looking at the likelihood or the possibility that those threats could become real. Sure, it's possible that Google will send the pictures of you sunburned and crying on a Jamaican beach to everyone on Earth, or use it as a Google Doodle, but that would give you full rights to sue Google for breaking its own Privacy Policy. Everyone loves to look for the Bogeyman in all of this, but here's what people never consider: what would be the benefit of Google misusing your data??

Google has already seen the negative side of making a mistake with user data after the?debacle?of Google Buzz, and that was just a mistake, not an active misuse of content. Google's entire business plan relies on having a good relationship with users. If people don't trust Google, Google gets no data, and can't sell you ads. Google could certainly take advantage of that trust, but the repercussions would hurt every product that Google has.?

So, here's a crazy idea: let's not pounce on Google (or any other company for that matter) for a potential problem, if that company has given no reason to ever be mistrusted. We get huge amounts of value from these products: they allow us to be more social, more productive, learn easier, and find entertainment any time we want. Sure, any of these companies can treat us badly, or misuse our data, but there's no reason to do that. As we've explained before, there is a big difference between "personal data" and "personally identifiable data", and the key to the personal data trade is for companies to use the former, while protecting the latter. So far, Google has done a very good job of that, so maybe we should wait and see if Google actually does something wrong, rather than attacking just because we can imagine the possible Bogeyman.
